If I remember right, I first encountered the Vampire Knight manga while searching for smileys. Yup, believe it or not, it was my quest for cute animated gifs that made that fateful encounter possible.
Vampire Knight by Hino Matsuri is definitely one of my faves (and so is Hino Matsuri's other manga "MeruPuri" but that's another story). It's also one of the best manga art I've seen in my entire animanga life. Heck, maybe it IS the best. I was always wondering what it would be like if it was animated. So, when I found out a few months ago from a friend that VK was going to be animated, I thought, "Wow! VK anime!! YAY!", and at the same time, "Oh no. Who's going to do it? I so hope they don't destroy it."
Alas! When I glimpsed the first promotional pictures of VK anime, my heart sank. First was disappointment, followed by rage. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!! The art was infinitely inferior to the manga!! And who was that sinister looking guy?? It was Zero. o_O WAAH. WAAH. WAAH.
Then, it was the anime commercial. I didn't think the part of my heart that contained VK could sink even further, but it did. It was bad!! And the song was kinda' bad too. T_T Fate was cruel. But all hope wasn't lost, the anime had yet to air. Who knows? The actual anime could be better (In fact, I just couldn't imagine it being worse given my current state then).
The first episode of Vampire Knight aired.
It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be!!! Yay. But it still wasn't good. ***More Later****
Ok, so "later" ended up being days later. But hey, that still falls under later, so my head is safe.
Going back to VK...
As I said, the anime wasn't as bad as I was fearing it would be. The voices were good, they fit the characters well. Yay for that! XD
The opening and ending songs weren't special. I guess, in a way, they were appropriate but they just don't fit into my preferences in music. Or who knows? Maybe it isn't just me and they really are bad. Boo for that. >_<
As for the art, it isn't as bad as I first thought it would be...
However #1, the background characters become distorted and.. just... wrong:

As for the story, only 2 episodes have aired so far, so I can't really tell yet. But this was a definite booboo for me:
How many vampires are they planning to add to the original cast?? Good grief. >_<
Actually, in my opinion, Aidou is the best-drawn character in this anime. Hm. Or wait, the chairman is well-drawn too... I guess they're on the same level, after all.
I'll save episode 2 for later, when the mishicorp version comes out, since their version is softsubbed and I get to get screenshots without subs even though I'm too lazy to download raws.
Oh, speaking of subs, to my knowledge, VK is being subbed by Shoku-dan and Mishicorp. Apparently, it's also on the projects list of conclave, supposedly a joint with a group called Diffusion, but they haven't released anything yet around 5 hours ago. I turned off feeddemon since my laptop's been going crazy lately and I'm suspecting it's either feeddemon or utorrent that's messing up my system. I have nooooo idea why. Anywaaaaaay, back to the subs... I've never heard of Shoku-dan before, but they're not bad. Pretty good, actually, and they're the fastest group among the three, so far. Mishicorp is a pretty decent group, in my experience, but I don't like their karaoke for this one. The effects were nice, but they seem a bit off considering how dull the rest of the screen is. I think Mishicorp also has better TL, but I'm not an expert at this, so I dunno how much weight my judgement has in this area. As for video quality, I have to say mishicorp is better. Plus, they're h264 mkv+softsubs, so I'm all for mishicorp right now. I'll wait til conclave arrives though, I loved their Gundam 00. :D
I would've wanted to post screenshot comparisons for mishicorp and shoku-dan but I already deleted shoku-dan's episode 1. Oh well.
Here are a couple of screens from ep1. I'll also put up screens from ep.2, if I don't get too lazy, when the mishicorp version comes out.
